Building money available for schools in the Marshalls from next month

A minister in the Marshall Islands says schools will be able to bid for building project money as early as next month.

Mattlan Zackras, who's in charge of public works, says two junior schools in Majuro will get asked to bid for US government funds shortly.

It will be the first money of about 14 million US dollars provided through the recently agreed Compact of Free Association.

Construction officials in the Marshall Islands say this funding is expected to breathe life into a construction industry that has seen little work in the past two years.

There have been almost no large government building projects.

Mr Zackhras says bid notices are expected to go out in August and September for the Marshall Islands High School, and outer island dispensaries, with the aim of starting construction in October.
