Fiji MPs pay increase in bill for flood relief and Mara funeral

Fiji's parliamentarians have voted themselves a pay increase.

The measure was slipped into a US$7 million Supplementary Appropriations Bill which included funding for relief and rehabilitation after last months floods and costs of the state funeral for the former president, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.

Of the amount US$5.3 million will go towards flood relief, US$770,000 for the funeral and nearly a million US dollars towards MPs pay.

The finance minister, Ratu Jone Kubuabola, said the allocation for the MPs pay increase was merged into the flood relief and funeral bill because there was not enough time to separate it.

Labour Party members voted for the bill, saying flood relief was urgent.
