Fiji security advisers to discuss claims military planned coup

10:37 am on 14 May 2004

Fiji's National Security Council will hold a special meeting on Monday over allegations that the military commander planned to overthrow the Qarase government.

Laisenia Qarase has called the meeting, which will be held in the absence of Commodore Bainimarama who is, himself, an adviser to the National Security Council.

The home affairs minister, Joketani Cokanasiga, will table a report on investigations into a planned coup by Commodore Bainimarama and senior army officers.

The minister had earlier downplayed the issue, saying there was a difference between planning and actually carrying out a coup, and no coup was carried out.

Fiji TV reports that the home affairs and information ministries have been instructed to refrain from making any comments on the issue until after Monday's meeting.
