A survey at Papua New Guinea's Angau Hospital in Morobe province has shown that 100 of every 500 babies born at the hospital each month are HIV positive.
Morobe provincial AIDS Committee chairman, Dr Paison Dakulala, says the figure is based on a 2003 survey of blood samples of pregnant mothers and TB patients who visited the hospital.
Dr Dakulala says 2.5 percent of 498 randomly selected mothers in the province were HIV positive, while up to 150 of 1,000 TB patients admitted annually at Angau were also HIV positive.
Dr Dakulala told the National newspaper that the disease is no longer the problem of a certain group of people, but something that affects the entire community.
