Solomons MPs choose a new Governor General

The Solomon Islands Parliament has elected a new governor general today.

The Unity, Peace and Reconcilation Minister, Nathaniel Waena, won the election by 27 votes in a second ballot.

He won over seven other candidates,including the former Prime Minister and current Speaker Sir Peter Kenilorea.

Mr Waena said after the result, he would work closely with the government and called on the people to reconcile and achieve unity.

He has to resign from Parliament before he can be sworn into the vice regal role.
