PNG mine operator expects to meet production targets despite poor third quarter

Lihir Gold Ltd says it expects to achieve a full year production target of 600,000 ounces of gold despite a fall in third quarter production due to lower grades and production levels at its Papua New Guinea mine.

Lihir says third quarter production was expected to be below 150,000 ounces at the PNG project but increases in grade and gold recovery in the final quarter would help it to produce 600,000 ounces for 2004.

The company reports a net loss of $US2.2 million for the six months to June, compared with a loss of $US6.7 million in the previous corresponding period.
