Russian space supply craft to crash in Pacific

4:39 pm on 21 December 2004

A report from Russia says a supply space ship will crash into the Pacific later this week.

The Russian news agency, Interfax, says a supply ship to the International Space Station will be taken out of orbit and fall 3-thousand kilometres east of the New Zealand capital, Wellington, on Christmas Eve.

Russian officials say the next supply ship is expected to take off soon after the dump, to deliver about 2.5 tonnes of cargo to the space station.

Interfax says the two crew on the space station had otherwise risked running out of food supplies in mid-January.
