Fiji's Citizens Constitutional Forum serves writ on former vice president

4:49 pm on 14 February 2005

The Citizens Constitutional Forum will serve a writ this week on the former vice president, Ratu Jope Seniloli, to begin legal action challenging his early release from prison last year.

The Forum's executive director, the Rev Aquila Yabaki, has told the Fiji Sun the NGO has now received sufficient funds in public donations to commence legal action.

The Reverend Yabaki says their case is against the early release of Seniloli by the attorney general, Qoriniasi Bale, after he had served only three months of his four-year jail term for being sworn in as the usurper president during the coup.

He says they feel that it is not fair under the law that someone is given preference just because he is a chief and was a former vice president.

The court documents allege that Seniloli's release was unfair and made for an improper purpose.

The Reverend Yabaki says the law should be the same for all citizens and Seniloli should serve the remainder of his prison term in jail.

The hearing is listed for mention in the Suva High Court early next month.
