1:48 pm on 25 February 2005

Fiji's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has launched the government-declared National Year of Forgiveness.

President Iloilo has also offered the government's apology to individuals and communities who have been hurt and asked for their forgiveness.

He said the challenge this year is to apply the value of forgiveness to the national healing process.

The ministry of national reconciliation and unity has organised a number of events during the year, mainly involving churches and youth groups, aimed at achieving reconciliation and forgiveness.

The cabinet declared 2005 as the National Year of forgiveness on the recommendation of the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase.
