In Solomon Islands, seven high-profile inmates of Rove central prison have been charged over the disappearance of funds meant to compensate people in Malaita.

In a special hearing of the Honiara Magistrates court held inside Rove Prison, the seven men were charged in connection with more than US$650,000 which has gone missing.

Earlier this week four other men were arrested and charged with similar offences; they were the Honiara lawyers Andrew Nori and Leslie Kwaiga, Inspector Leslie Ofu and the Honiara businessman Jeremy Rua.

The charges against all 11 men result from an investigation by the Corruption Targeting Team, which had worked over a long period of time to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

The Assistant Police Commissioner for Crime and Prosecutions, Johnson Siapu, has thanked the public for the assistance offered to investigators in the case.
