The senior police officer in the Regional Assistance Mission in Solomon Islands says the sentencing of a former militant leader to life imprisionment for murder is an historic day.

Harold Keke who led the so called Guadalcanal Liberation Front, and two of his commanders, Ronnie Cawa and Francis Lela, have been convicted and sentenced for the murder of Cabinet Minister Father Augustine Geve.

The murder happened at Haleatu village on the Guadalcanal Weather Coast in August 2002.

Commander Sandi Peisley says she is pleased with the development.

"This has been a very important step in peace and reconciliation in terms of the Weather Coast and a good result in terms of a lot of hard work that was done by the combined teams in the Solomon Islands."
