The controversial Fiji army officer, Lt Col Filipo Tarakinikini, has sued President Iloilo, the military commander Frank Bainimarama and the attorney general for their decision not to accept his resignation from overseas.

The Fiji Times reports that President Iloilo has been cited in the case in his capacity as commander in chief of the military.

Commodore Bainimarama has been cited for recommending to President Iloilo that he refuse to accept Tarakinikini's resignation and attorney general Qoriniasi Bale as the chief legal advisor to the government.

In papers filed in the High Court, Tarakinikini has accused Commodore Bainimarama of bringing a style of leadership foreign to senior officers when he assumed command in 1999.

Tarakinikini says Commodore Bainimarama's leadership was personalised, egocentric and capricious, and he had a tendency to be unpredictable and inconsistent.

Commodore Bainimarama refused to accept Tarakinikini's attempted resignation from abroad in March 2002, because he is wanted in Fiji to answer questions about his alleged involvement in the coup and the Suva mutiny.

Commodore Bainimarama's decision was later upheld by the Supreme Court.

The military has declared Tarakinikini a deserter who is absent without official leave and he is subject to immediate army arrest on his return to Fiji.
