Papua New Guinea's prime minister, Sir Michael Somare has declared that Port Moresby is the filthiest city in the Pacific and needs to rid itself of discarded plastic shopping bags.

Sir Michael was responding to a question in parliament this week about the government's ban on plastic shopping bags which come into effect in June.

The prime minister told the house that Port Moresby was a filthy city of plastics.

He added that it was full of other rubbish as well as graffiti which was not seen in rural villages.

He called on the city's inhabitants to take pride in the nation's capital and take responsibility for keeping it clean.
