Anti-independence parties in New Caledonia campaign for approval of EU constitution

Anti-independence parties in New Caledonia are asking people there to vote in favour of a new constitution for the European Union.

The Future Together and the Rassemblement-UMP party are campaigning in support of the French government, which at the end of the month is holding a referendum on its plan to ratify the EU constitution.

The president of New Caledonia's southern province and member of the Future Together party, Philippe Gomes, told reporters that saying 'Yes' to Europe would mean saying 'Yes' to France and 'Yes' to a future of progress and liberty.

New Caledonia benefits from the European Union through its Overseas Countries and Territories group.
