Fiji's PM says his government will not move over Reconciliation Bill

6:37 am on 13 June 2005

Fiji's Prime Minister says his government will push ahead with its Reconciliation and Unity Bill and will not be moved by opposition.

Speaking on Fiji TV, Laisenia Qarase has dismissed the opposition from NGOs, civil society groups and prominent citizens as only the views of a noisy minority.

Mr Qarase says opponents of the Bill have been helped by media groups to have their voices heard overseas.

He says that is why there is so much negativity about the Bill.

Mr Qarase says the granting of amnesty and pardons is not new and the decisions will depend on the Amnesty Commission, which will gather information from George Speight and anyone else who applies for amnesty.
