Fiji's top law officer says outside pressure won't change Reconciliation Bill

Fiji's attorney general says no pressure from outside governments will result in amendments to the Reconciliation and Unity Bill.

The Fiji Sun also quotes Qoriniasi Bale as saying only the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, can make amendments to the proposed legislation, because it's his Bill.

The Sun says Mr Bale was responding to concerns raised by the New Zealand prime minister, Helen Clark, that perpetrators of offences against the state shouldn't go unpunished.

But the Citizens Constitutional Forum says the New Zealand government is very clear on its stand, that it opposes any law that rewards those who bring down a democratically elected government.

The Forum spokesman, Ponipate Ravulo says New Zealand is taking the lead, in reminding Fiji of regional resolutions and international conventions it has signed, regarding human rights, governance and security.

Mr Ravulo says the Qarase government should take New Zealand's stand on this very seriously.
