The resident representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Fiji has expressed concern about the country's development.

Richard Dictus says Fiji's ranking in the UN's Human Development Index (HDI) has been slipping consistently over the years - from 66 in the world in 2000 to 81 now.

He says there is some measure of UNDP concern about economic progress and groth as well as social development and human wellbeing.

The Human Development Index based on the literacy rate, gross domestic product per head of population and health standards to assess longevity and a decent standard of living.
