PNG Speaker accepts Peter Yama in Madang Governor controversy

7:04 pm on 26 July 2005

The Speaker of the Papua New Guinea national parliament, Jeffrey Nape, says he accepts Peter Yama as governor of Madang over James Yali.

Mr Nape says he has documentation showing that Mr Yama was elected the Governor of Madang on July 15, and that there appeared to be no court documents before him disputing the election of Mr Yama.

He says the election of Mr Yama appears to be proper and that it is not directly questioned or challenged.

The Post Courier newspaper reports Mr Nape saying that for this reason and for the purpose of the business of parliament, he will recognise Mr Yama as the Governor until such time the court decides otherwise.

A point of contention arose two weeks ago when it was said Mr Yama had been elected to replace Mr Yali.

However, the Inter-relations Minister Sir Peter Barter disputed Mr Yama's election, saying it was not valid and that Mr Yali's replacement was still outstanding.
