Solomons leader set to speak to striking workers in Russell Islands

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, is to speak to striking workers at the Russell Islands Plantation, during a constituency tour this weekend.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation is reporting that prime minister Kemakeza will have an audience with some of the striking and non striking workers of Russell Islands Plantation Estate Limited, or RIPEL.

More than 800 workers at RIPEL have been on strike for more than a year, saying they can't work under the general manager, John Whiteside.

The Trade Disputes Panel has recently ruled in favour of the National Union of Workers, which wants Mr Whiteside to be removed.

But the company chairman, Patrick Wong, says he'll begin legal proceedings to challenge the decision.
