Opposition mounts to to proposed PNG nickel project

11:22 am on 23 November 2005

The desire of the Papua New Guinea Government to bring on stream the multimillion kina Ramu Nickel project in the province of Madang may be derailed if opposition against it gains ground.

The National newspaper reports the campaign against the Ramu project is being engineered and promoted by some individuals and organisations in PNG and overseas.

An unsigned full-page advertisement against the project appeared in the PNG newspapers several weeks ago.

This advertisement passed by without debate.

The opposition is against a project that had all the necessary approval from the PNG Government in 2001 and has been awaiting financiers.
