Fiji's newest five star resort opens its doors this weekend and is expected to boost Fiji's tourist numbers by 40,000 a year.

The 45-million US dollar Sofitel Resort and Spa is a joint venture between the national airline Air Pacific, and the life insurance and banking group, Colonial Limited.

Sofitel's General Manager Paul Stevens, says the resort will help to ease the accommodation shortage of top hotels.

He says it is the first five star resort to be built in Fiji for decades.

"I think its a super exciting thing to open a 5 star resort in any country, but to open it in Fiji, with the Fiji bula factor, the smiling factor and enthusiasm of our youthful staff, I'd love for people to come and experience it. 17"

Paul Stevens says the extensive conference facilities on offer will also be a drawcard .
