Solomon Islands has appointed a new high commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Bernard Bata'anisia, and warned him to avoid extravagance.

During an investiture ceremony yesterday, the Governor General, Sir Nathaniel Waena warned Mr Bata'anisia that the operating cost of missions overseas was substantial.

Sir Nathaniel said that considering the Solomons' weak financial situation, cost-saving measures that would not compromise the effective discharge of diplomatic duty should become the order of the day.

Mr Bata'anisia is expected to travel to Port Moresby to take up his post before the end of this month.
