Solomons curfew lifted after return to calm

1:48 pm on 27 April 2006

The curfew imposed in the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, last week has been lifted.

The police commissioner, Shane Castles, says the Governor General Sir Nathaniel Waena has issued a revocation order for the curfew to be lifted as from tonight.

The dusk-to-dawn restrictions had been declared a week ago in response to unprecedented riots which saw mobs burn and loot mainly Asian-owned businesses.

The liquor ban has also been lifted but the public has been urged to maintain peace and order.

Among those detained over the rioting are two opposition MPs who have been charged with incitement.
