Fiji's new government to re-introduce Reconciliation Bill

10:07 am on 17 May 2006

Mr Qarase says his new government will bring back the controversial Reconciliation and Unity Bill.

In its original form the Bill was designed to set up a Commission to fast track amnesty for coup convicts like Speight, erase their criminal records, give immunity to those not yet prosecuted and ask the courts to suspend proceedings against those facing charges.

Mr Qarase has told Radio Legend the Bill lapsed when parliament was dissolved and there will be significant changes when it is re-introduced as a new Bill.

He says he has no doubt that the changes will satisfy the many people who opposed the Bill and they will go along with it.

Fiji's military has been strongly opposed to the bill, resulting in a year long confrontation with the government.
