Fiji Labour party accepts nine portfolios offered by prime minister

The Fiji Labour Party has decided to accept the nine portfolios offered by the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and join his multi-party cabinet.

The Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says the decision was reached at a caucus meeting with a majority of people wanting to make the multi-party cabinet system work.

He says it is their responsibility to fulfill this obligation but the Labour party and Mr Qarase's SDL party have different policies on key issues.

These include the Unity and Reconciliation bill which Labour has opposed from its introduction as the draft contained an amnesty provision which could see coup convicts pardoned or those jailed for coup offences, set free.

The Labour party vice-president, Krishna Datt, says it is possible, however, to work out a common mandate.

"Let's face it, on the bread and butter issues, there aren't very many differences. There's some differences to do with land settlement but that could wait for a while, while we continue to dialogue as to how we might resolve that. There's some differences on the reconciliation and unity bill. The prime minister is already on record saying that he has changed substantially the nature of the bill so there is compromise in the air."
