The President of the Divine Word University in Madang in Papua New Guinea, Father Jan Czuba, has appealled to local authorities to get on top of violent crime to ensure the safety of unversity students.

Father Czubba's appeal to the Eastern highlands provincial government comes a day after the Roman Catholic-run university closed its Kainantu campus after a mob, believed to be prisoners on the run, raped two female students over the weekend.

Father Czuba said until safety measures are improved, tha Kainantu campus will remain closed.

PNG's National Broadcasting Corporation quotes Father Czuba as saying a number of concerns were raised with the provincial government concerning general safety, and that the university would not compromise the safety of staff and students.

Students from Kainantu have been relocated to the main Madang campus and are receiving conselling and rehabilitation from professional staff.
