The Provincial Health Director of the Solomons province of Temotu, Dr Günter Kittel, has said the area must try to reduce its fast growing population.

He says the traditional ways of birth control have been lost , but so far modern forms of contraception are not yet widely accepted.

Dr Kittel says since 2002, it has been impossible to plan using an expected population growth.

The SIBC says he reminded those who attended the opening of a new maternity ward at Lata Hospital that without some action the province could have a population of one hundred thousand people by 2050 or 2060.
