7:07 pm on 25 July 2006

Fiji's ministry of education says it has withheld a grant from a high school near Nausori after finding discrepancies in the administration accounts.

The around 11 hundred students at Vunimono High School were told to stay home after a disagreement over the release of the government funding for running the school.

The ministry's director of secondary education, Suliasi Lutubula, says schools must provide the correct documents if they want the government to provide funds:

"For this particular case we have found out descrepanices on the financial statement and we also have proof of abuse of funds by the management and that is the reason for the withholding of payment of grant for this particular school."

The Fiji education ministry's, Suliasi Lutubula.

The school's financial administrator, Latchman Singh, says they hve decided to keep the children away until the grant is paid out.
