The leader of the opposition Cook Islands Party, Sir Geoffrey Henry has stepped down from politics, ending a career that has spanned 41 years.

Sir Geoffrey stood down after a promise he made to his wife Lady Louisa and events that followed last week's decision by the Queens Representative to dissolve parliament.

However, Sir Geoffrey says it's time to look ahead although but what he'll do is still not clear.

"I don't know which emotion is the most poignant, a departure from what has always been my main passion, which is politics, or the excitement of the adventure of looking for a new passion. So, I'm still searching."
