7:52 am on 9 August 2006

The Supreme Court in Samoa has given the village council of Lano village in Savaii Island, ten days to remove their ban against a chief of the village, Su'a Rimoni Ah Chong.

The Samoa Observer reports that the order was made in court during the evidence of the Pulenu'u or village Mayor in the current hearing of Su'a's election petition against the Minister of Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Mulitalo Siafausa Vui.

Justice Slicer said the ostracism was unlawful and the pulenu'u and other village matais will be jailed for contempt of court if they disobey the order.

The petition by the Samoa Party leader is still being heard.
