Tests by the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency of water samples from Island Breeze water Company, also known as Island Purified water of Faagalu showed the presence of total coliform bacteria.
The ASEPA has alerted the public that the water samples did not meet the American Samoa Drinking Water Standard, but it says it's not an emergency.
Total coliform bacteria is generally not harmful themselves but can indicate the presence of potentially harmful bacteria.
The Agency is recommending that members of the public refrain form drinking Island Breeze water until the problems are resolved.
People with severely compromised immune systems, infants and some elderly are at increased risk.
They should seek other safe sources of drinking water.
KHJ News attempted to obtain comments from Island Breeze but both their listed phone numbers in Fagaalu and Leone were disconnected,
Island Breeze is the oldest purified water company in the territory.
