Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, says he will deal with the cabinet minister who publicly called for his sacking on his return to office on Monday.

Mr Qarase is currently on an official visit to Australia for talks with his Australian counterpart, John Howard.

He has told the Fijilive news website that he has had a look at the statement about the call for his sacking and would like to deal with it soon after his return tomorrow, possibly at a meeting with the minister on Monday.

The minister for public utilities, Robin Urwin, called for the sacking of Mr Qarase and the finance minister, Ratu Jone Kubuabola, over what he said was the lamentable state of the economy in Vanua Levu which includes his constituency.

He made the call at the Fiji Tourism Forum on Thursday night in front of the minister of finance who was attending the event

The next day Mr Urwin said it had been a joke to stimulate discussion, but during his address he had said that he might no longer be a cabinet minister following his statements.
