Police are reported to have watched helplessly as an angry mob armed with sticks stormed into the house of a Fiji businessman accused of the murder of his daughter's boyfriend.

The Fiji Sun reports the mob from Lomolomo village near Nadi set fire to the house, and killed the family dogs and threw them in the fire.

The attack took place after businessman Ramesh Prasad was charged with murder for the alleged killing of 17-year Kinijioji Kabanavanua after finding him with his daughter in the early hours of Monday morning.

Mr Prasad's family had earlier been evacuated from the house on the advice of the Lautoka magistrate's court.

Police have increased the number of officers guarding the premises while Mr Prasad remains in custody pending his next court appearance in two weeks.
