Kiribati education ministry refuses comment about scholarship bungle aftermath

Kiribati's education ministry is refusing to comment about alleged sackings over a recent scholarship bungle.

The Parent Teacher Association has said some education ministry staff are appealing the loss of their jobs over the government's controversial allocation of university scholarships.

This year 18 students, who hadn't qualified to enter degree programmes at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, were selected, while the students who had made the grade were overlooked.

A commission of inquiry into the scholarship allocation was completed in July but a report to the president is yet to be made public.

The PTA's chairman, Dr Baua Tebau, says one sacked worker was an education officer who saw the original list of names altered after it was approved by senior education officials.

But the deputy secretary for Kiribati's Ministry of Education, Tarsu Murdoch, says she is unable to confirm or deny the sackings or anything related to that matter.

"There is a press release that is being sent out on that from the Office of the President. So if it's in connection with the commission of inquiry, that report is with the office of the president."
