Quake strikes off Vanuatu's Tanna island

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 has struck near Vanuatu but there are no reports of casualties or damage.

The quake was 165 kilometres under the seabed, about 70 kilometres north-west of the island of Tanna.

ysn official at the Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office says no injuries or damage have been reported after the earthquake, which hit at dawn.

The earthquake occurred close to the faultline separating the Australian and Pacific plates of the earth's crust, where quakes and volcanic activity are common.
