Fiji capital still facing water shortages

12:08 pm on 25 October 2006

Much of Fiji's population living in and around the capital is without water this morning, some for the third day.

Tens of thousands of people in the heavily populated Suva-Nausori corridor have been without piped water since Monday afternoon.

Residents of central Suva and suburban areas have been without water since last night.

Many schools have not opened for the second consecutive day and students have been sent home.

Factories and food outlets are unable to operate and many people have not been able to go to work.

The Public Works Department, which is responsible for water and sewerage, is unable to give any firm deadline to restore supplies.

The minister for public utilities, Robin Irwin, says there is no water at his home.
