Parts of PNG shaken by strong earthquake

A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has hit the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea.

The Pacific Tsunami Centre said there was no threat of a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami but it said earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis.

The tremor, in the early hours of the morning was centered about 550 kilometres northeast of Port Moresby.
