Fiji PM delays move against Labour party cabinet members

8:34 am on 25 November 2006

Fiji's pioneering multi-party cabinet will remain intact, at least for the weekend.

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has not yet advised President Iloilo to dismiss the four Labour Party cabinet ministers who voted against the 2007 Budget this week.

This follows two sets of talks between the Mr Qarase and the Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry.

Mr Chaudhry says he has appealed to the prime minister to let the four ministers stay in cabinet because there are no ground rules for the multi-party cabinet.

Mr Qarase says they are making an effort to preserve the multi-party cabinet and further talks will take place on Monday.

Mr Qarase says they are willing to come to some kind of political agreement in the best interests of the country to stop the multi-party cabinet from collapsing.
