Tonga fishing industry discussed at conference

8:59 am on 9 February 2007

Tonga's acting prime minister, Dr. Viliami Tangi, says much needs to be done to increase the country's foreign earnings from fishing.

He has told a conference on commercial fishing that promised development has not eventuated.

Dr Tangi says that although market demands and prices have grown in recent years, these have been overtaken by increased production and marketing costs.

The conference is looking at existing commercial fisheries operating in Tonga, and at how to improve their performance, and how to make them more profitable.

Dr Tangi says fisheries is one of the three sectors, along with agriculture and tourism, that Government is looking to for increased contribution to the nation's foreign earnings.
