New Australian High Commissioner to Solomons presents his credentials

10:12 am on 20 March 2007

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister Mannaseh Sogavare has accepted Australia's High Commissioner Peter Hooton after refusing to see him for three months.

Mr Sogavare yesterday met and accepted the letter of credentials from the Australian appointed Commissioner who also met the cabinet.

Mr Sogavare describes the development as a giant step forwards normalising the strained relationship between Canberra and Honiara.

The prime minster says there appears to be a lot of misunderstanding between the two parties resulting in the diplomatic standoff.

But he says that issues can always be addressed.

"What happened this afternoon is a very important gesture by Solomon islands government, and I made it very clear to the High Commissioner, please take this as a gesture of goodwill by Solomon islands government to take our relationship forward."

However Mr Sogavare says his government stands by its position on the Julian Moti affair, it's demand for Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer's expected apology and what is described as Australia's dominance of RAMSI.
