More than 1000 candidates have been nominated to contest next month's Papua New Guinea General Elections by the close of nominations yesterday.

But the figure is expected to triple by the end of today.

The Post Courier reports that progressive figures obtained from Electoral Commission officials indicate 1,102 candidates have so far been nominated to run for open and provincial seats in 14 provinces, including the National Capital District.

There are estimates that 3000-plus people may contest the 109 seats.
