New Zealand Law society remains concerned about erosion of rule of law in Fiji

1:46 pm on 11 June 2007

The president of the New Zealand Law Society, John Marshall, says he remains concerned about the erosion of the rule of law in Fiji.

He was speaking after Fiji's interim attorney-general called for the resignation of the country's Court of Appeal president, Justice Gordon Ward.

Justice Ward was unavailable to comment on the call but the independence of the judicial system is being questioned as a result of the pressure being applied.

There are also several judges on the Court of Appeal who are not expected to renew their contracts which expire shortly.

Mr Marshall says this will have an impact on the judiciary.

"It is a matter of concern because clearly one of the great benefits to the Fijian judicial system of having New Zealand judges, or retired New Zealand judges, sitting on the Court of Appeal there, is that they've been able to bring objectivity and a complete independence to that role."

John Marshall, the president of the New Zealand Law Society.
