Solomons leader plans to use contractors in parliamentary secretary roles

3:05 pm on 11 June 2007

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has confirmed he will appoint non parliamentarians to some of the parliamentary secretary positions the government is establishing.

Mr Sogavare says he will be hiring experts to fill in certain positions which MPs don't have the knowledge to perform.

He says some of the work the secretaries will be required to perform is highly technical and will be contracted out.

Mr Sogavare says despite strong opposition that the 10 new positions are unconstitutional, legal advice he has indicates the government's move is within constitutional guidelines.
