Tonga political reform process back on track - Government

3:18 pm on 10 July 2007

The Tonga Government says the political reform process is back on track with the establishment on Monday of a parliamentary tripartite committee to discuss suggested changes to the country's political system.

The tripartite committee consists of three members from the Government, three nobles' representatives, and three people's representatives.

The chairman of the committee, the Honourable Luani told media that he is very conscious of the gravity and delicacy of the task and has asked for the prayers and support of the country as the committee begins its work.

Public servants and some pro-democracy supporters have said previously there is little to discuss since there is already widespread backing for the reform ideas presented last year by the National Committe for Political Reform.

They say these plans could easily be implemented in time for the elections in 2008 but the prime minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, has indicated he doubts this is possible.
