The Marianas Visitors Authority has floated a proposal for a government-owned airline to bring in tourists to the CNMI from Asia.

The Authority's Chairman Jerry Tan says the idea is to fly to second-tier Asian cities not currently served by the primary scheduled airlines, Northwest Air and Asiana Airlines.

Mr Tan says if the Northern Marianas had its own flag carrier, there would be 26 flights per week from destinations in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The Northern Marianas is expecting about 400,000 visitors this year.
