New Solomons Government promises cut backs on appointments of political cronies

The new Solomon Islands Government is promising a new approach to appointments after the previous administration was criticised for staffing offices with political supporters.

Transparency Solomon Islands says this cronyism was costly for the country and served no useful purpose.

The chief secretary of the new Government, Mathew Wale, says they are fully supportive of the TSI call.

But he says some political appointments will still be necessary because they want the Prime Minister's Department staffed by competent public policy professionals.

"So in that sense they will be political appointments, that is, unfortunately, a necessity. We have to get the right people - that is the question. And if we get competent people there is not the need for as many as the last government had. So our hope is we will find those people and be able to work with them."
