Fiji Labour Party leader dismisses internal criticism of party's links with interim administration

The leader of the Fiji Labour party says he doesn't believe there is support for the party to withdraw from the interim government.

Bijai Prasad has stepped down as president of the party's Nadi branch , saying the current regime has caused a rift between the Indo-Fijian and indigenous Fijian peoples.

But Mahendra Chaudhry says there is nothing the interim government is doing that gives him electoral worries, and the current reforms are necessary.

He says he believes the party's electoral support is intact.

"Those people, these corrupt politicians, corrupt chiefs who have been ousted, they're the ones who are trying to portray a picture of alienated indigenous community. In fact what is being done is to ensure that the benefits of development in this country, the benefits of the resources the indigenous people own trickle down to the ordinary guy."

Mr Chaudhry says Mr Prasad's views certainly don't reflect those of the party or the grass roots support of the party.
