Anger in American Samoa at cancellation of sports at all schools following violence

A decision by the American Samoa High School Athletic Association to cancel high school sports activities has been criticised.

Fights broke out among spectators at a game between Tafuna and Samoana High Schools last Wednesday.

The violence continued, and on Thursday, one group of students started throwing stones at a bus carrying students from the other school, as well as members of the public.

That led to the Association telling all schools the remaining high school sports will be cancelled.

The principal of South Pacific Academy, Evelyn Lilio, said it was disturbing that all high schools are being punished.

She has asked Association to consider letting schools who were not involved in the fighting continue the remainder of the sports calendar.
