Small businesses in Fiji are suffering a fall off in sales

Small businesses in Fiji are suffering a fall off in sales of up to forty per cent.

A regular survey by the Fiji Retailers Association has found a number of businesses have had to close because of a drop off in spending that is happening around the country.

The Association's President, Himmat Lodhia, says the cost of running a business is high with inflation of over seven per cent and hikes in the cost of fuel.

He says the breaking point is now the reduction in the amount of money in people's pockets:

"Government last reviewed salaries and wages across the board, which meant also that people will have less money to spend."
