Price of powdered milk in Fiji increases

11:22 am on 6 March 2008

The Fiji Prices and Income Board increased the price of powdered milk on January.

The board told the Fiji Times the powdered milk price had only gone up in supermarkets recently because outlets had been legally bound to finish the stock they held.

Supermarkets recently raised the price of 500-grams of powdered milk from US$3.53 to US$3.89.

Prices and Income Board officer Biutiviti Biulailai says the January approval was for the price of 500g powdered milk to jump around 8 US dollars.

He says there have been no more increases since then.

The Consumer Council chief executive Premila Kumar says milk is an essential item and any price increase or decrease should be made known to people.
